This program has been established to provide support for parents who feel their children may need additional help, are finding the content somewhat challenging or those who may not be as strong in particular subjects but need them as part of a pathway to a particular outcome. There may also be circumstances that lead to teachers suggesting to parents that there may be a benefit from their child participating in these groups too. While ultimately, student’s do not need to participate in the Study Support Groups we feel it is important to offer the service to support student development and learning in alternate ways.
Being an active participant in your child’s learning and development and keeping in regular contact with your child’s teachers will give you an understanding of the areas they excel in and where they may face challenges. We encourage you, if you do have questions or would like to know the thoughts of your child’s teacher as to if your child would benefit from participating in a Study Support Group to contact them. Alternatively, you can contact us to talk further about your options.
Due to the type of support we are providing, unfortunately we are not able to guarantee that your child will get a specific grade in a specific class. We can, however, assure you that the small group support will provide your child with additional opportunities to use their knowledge within the subject area. These opportunities will help your child be better and more prepared for the next steps in the learning process. Increased instructional time and peer time will also aid in the development of their skills and give the students the increased opportunities to practice the higher order thinking skills that become increasingly important from Grade 5 and up.
Each of the staff leading a Study Support Group has been hand-selected according to their background, experience and knowledge regarding the subject area.
Each of the weekly sessions will take a deeper dive into the weekly content that has been covered in class. With the additional in-depth focus on the area, students will get the opportunity to examine the topics with supplementary teacher support.
We are currently in the process of creating the opportunity for students to be provided with the one-on-one Student Support sessions if parents would like. This option may be available upon request and will be subject to teacher availability. These sessions will also be charged at a different pay scale than the small group sessions. Please contact us if you are interested in pursuing this option.
Currently we will be offering:
The expansion of the program is currently being planned. Subjects that are being planned are Japanese, general English Language and Literature, presentation skills, music lessons and additional language lessons.
It is important that the small group sessions and class content are aligned in order for students to be successful. As a result, there will be both initial and ongoing discussions between the two groups of staff. In some cases the Class Teachers may be the tutors, as the content is so specific it is necessary to have them run the support sessions [i.e. DP Chemistry and DP Math]. We feel this communication is integral in order to support your students best in their learning.
